Artist Statement: Talking & Listening to Plants
“Trilliums and Ants,” “Ephemeral,” and “Autumn Succession” are three poems from a larger poetry manuscript entitled Solstice. Solstice is a book of poems that examines the lake that my family lives on and the natural world that surrounds us on, beneath, and beside Solstice Lake. The book of poems is a calendric, meaning it follows the seasons, beginning in May, when we first visited this land, and ending in April, a year later. Each poem examines a wild animal, plant, or natural process. Each poem strives to blend poetry and science, to highlight that the beauty around us (including poetry) includes so much beautiful natural science. This process of learning natural science and observing the world around Solstice Lake allows my family and me to more fully root ourselves in our home landscape, learning the animals, places, and natural processes, so we can better fit into our landscape.
